What the homeowner started with
The driveway had cracked through and was breaking apart at the edges. Patching a slab in that condition buys a season or two at most, so the surface came out and was hauled off before anything new went down.
How it was rebuilt
The subgrade was cut and compacted, then new concrete was poured alongside the garage and out to the front of the property, with a patio and step at the back door. Turf, cobble borders and a redwood screen fence finished the areas the concrete does not cover.
Why the base decides how long a driveway lasts
Concrete cracks where the ground under it moves. Proper excavation depth, compaction and control joints are what keep a driveway flat under vehicle weight — none of it is visible once the pour is finished, and all of it decides whether the slab is still sound years later.
