What affects the cost of landscape design?
Short answer
Landscape design cost depends mostly on the size of the area, the slope and soil, what has to be removed, drainage work, the materials you choose, and how easy the yard is to reach. Size and scope
A single patio costs less than a full front and back yard with walls, steps, turf and lighting. Doing it in phases is an option if you want to spread the work out.
Slope and soil
Hillside lots often need retaining walls or steps, and clay soil may need deeper base. Both add work that a flat, well-draining yard doesn't need.
Removal and demolition
Old concrete, lawn, roots or failing walls have to come out and be hauled away before anything new goes in.
Drainage
Grading, drains and making sure water moves away from the house protect everything built on top. It's worth including in the budget from the start.
Materials
Pavers, stamped concrete, natural stone, turf, rock and planting all differ in price. Extras like seat walls, fire features and lighting add to it.
Access
Narrow side yards or backyards without equipment access mean more work by hand.
